Mykel Blanco y su Salsa Mayor in London

  • Electric Brixton Brixton Hill London, England, SW2 1RJ United Kingdom (map)

Maykel Blanco was born in 1981 in Havana, his parents were very good dancers, and he enjoyed listening and humming popular songs. Since he was very little, he was involved in school cultural activities where he sang, danced and imitated artists in fashion, sometimes with saucepans, boxes or anything he could find. At the age of 12, he began to study percussion and later on, at the conservatory Amadeo Roldan.

When he was just 15 years old, he established his first group and at 18 years his first orchestra. The young Maykel worked very hard to produce over 10 CDs, and recording as a percussionist in more than 40 albums. He was a big part of the Jazz ensemble “Habana Express”.

In 2005 he assumed the musical direction of Salsa Mayor, devoting all his energy, creative and musical talent to it. Within a short time he became one of the most representative groups in Cuban music, and toured various countries around the world and establish himself as one of the leading artists in Cuban music today.

His latest release, “Presente”, its an explosion of Cuban rhythms with songs full of energy that reaffirm Mikel Blanco as one of the most influential timba composers, who is not afraid of taking risks and who contagious and energetic arrangements are made for the dancefloor. Songs like “Mi Padrino’, the unmistakable vocals of Altides Landa on “Aggayu”. “Presente” is more than a Cuban salsa album, it is a celebration of Cuban music, a musical journey to one of Havana’s best parties.
